Halloween night is over. The costumes are put away, the pumpkins are still sitting on the porch, and somewhere in the house is a bag overflowing with candy. Now comes the question: What do you do with all that Halloween candy?
Some families enjoy treats a little at a time. Others divide the haul into smaller portions. And some invite a mysterious visitor into their Halloween traditions: the Switch Witch.
The Switch Witch is a playful tradition in which children choose some candy to leave out overnight. While they sleep, a parent or caregiver exchanges it for a small surprise. Think of it as a Halloween cousin of the Tooth Fairy, but with candy rather than a tooth.
The surprise could be a book, puzzle, art supplies, stuffed animal, or a special family activity. It need not be expensive. The fun comes from imagination and the opportunity to choose.
Why try it? For some households, a candy exchange makes an overwhelming pile of sweets more manageable. For children with certain food allergies or dietary needs, it may offer another way to enjoy Halloween, though parents should still carefully check treats and prevent allergen exposure.
To begin, explain the idea before bedtime. Invite children to pick which pieces they want to trade and which favorites they want to keep. Place the chosen candy in a special bowl or bag, and leave a surprise in its place overnight. In the morning, enjoy the discovery together.
The most important ingredient is choice. Children should not be pressured to surrender candy they worked hard to collect, and treats do not need to be described as bad or shameful. If your family prefers to keep the candy, that is perfectly fine too.
Some households share treats, save them for movie nights, or simply enjoy them over time. There is no single right Halloween tradition. The goal is laughter, connection, and memories—not another task parents must perform perfectly.
So tell us: does the Switch Witch visit your house, or is your family proudly Team Keep the Candy?
