Sometimes the Best Family Plans Are the Simplest

It can feel like we have to plan something big to make family time special. Tickets, reservations, packed schedules and a list of things everyone is supposed to see and do.

But some of our favorite days remind us that family time can be much simpler than that. Getting everyone outside, finding a beautiful place and giving ourselves permission to slow down can be enough. Let the kids explore. Walk beside the water. Sit under a tree. Take a few pictures. Laugh about something silly. Have conversations that probably wouldn’t have happened if everyone were staring at a screen.

Our time at Harris Park near Milton-Freewater, Oregon was a good reminder of exactly that. There was no need to make every minute productive. The point was simply being together.

As families, we’re often so busy preparing for the next thing that we forget we’re already living the days we’ll someday look back on.

You don’t need an extraordinary day to make an extraordinary memory. 🤎 The Fleming Collective · Sharing Our Family With Yours

Real life, real memories and the beautiful mess in between.

The Ordinary Days Are the Ones We’ll Miss

Family life usually isn’t made up of picture-perfect moments. It’s shoes by the door, somebody asking what’s for dinner, teasing each other, running errands, doing dishes, talking over one another and laughing about something that probably isn’t even that funny.

Those ordinary moments can feel small while we’re living them. But someday, they may be the moments we wish we could have back for just one more afternoon.

♡ Turns out, these were the good old days. A little note from our family to yours.

GUIDED BY HIS GRACE

Faith

Sometimes we just need to become quiet enough to notice. ♡

God Made a Beautiful World. Remember to Look at It.

There is something different about spending time outside. The sound of water moving over rocks. Sunlight coming through the trees. A breeze you can’t control. Children discovering something that adults would probably walk right past.

Creation has a way of reminding us that we’re part of something much bigger than our schedules. Sometimes we ask God for peace while continuing to surround ourselves with noise. Maybe today we can make a little room for quiet.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”— Psalm 19:1

Go outside. Take a walk. Sit beside the water. Look at the sky. Say a prayer that isn’t asking for anything. Just say: “Thank You, Lord. I noticed.”

There is so much beauty around us that costs absolutely nothing to enjoy. Maybe one of the best things we can teach our children is to notice it too. ♡

Encouragement for everyday life and reminders of the hope that carries us through every season.

God Is in the Ordinary, Too

We often look for God in the big answers and life-changing moments, but He is present in an ordinary day too. A quiet prayer while making dinner, a needed phone call, the strength to show patience when ours is running thin, or simply realizing we were given another day together can all remind us that ordinary does not mean unimportant.

“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 118:24

Handwritten reminder for today: Thank You, Lord, for today. ♡

SIMPLE LIVING · BIG JOY

Lifestyle

A family adventure doesn’t have to be far from home.

Turn an Ordinary Weekend Into a Mini Family Adventure

You don’t necessarily need a plane ticket or expensive hotel to give your family a little getaway. Look at what’s within an hour or two of home. Find a park you’ve never visited. Pack an easy picnic. Bring cards or a favorite outdoor game. Let the kids help choose the snacks. Take a walk somewhere new. And if you’re enjoying yourselves, stay longer.

That’s one reason Harris Park makes such a fun local option. You can make it whatever fits your family—anything from a few hours outdoors to an overnight camping trip.

One family might spend the afternoon at the playground and river and head home for dinner. Another might bring the RV and turn it into a weekend. Both count as an adventure.

Family travel doesn’t always have to mean going far. Sometimes it means seeing home with fresh eyes.

A Home Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Feel Wonderful

A welcoming home does not require a magazine-perfect room or a big decorating budget. Straighten the room where everyone gathers, turn on a warm lamp, clear one cluttered surface, add a simple seasonal arrangement to the table, and let the familiar smell of dinner or something baking do the rest.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a place where people feel comfortable enough to sit down, stay awhile and be themselves.

Monday Night Dinner: Easy One-Pan Garlic Parmesan Chicken & Potatoes

September 28, 2026 · Prep: 15 minutes · Bake: 35–45 minutes · Serves: 4–6

Mondays have a way of arriving with a full calendar and the question nobody wants to answer: “What are we having for dinner?” This is exactly the kind of meal we love at The Fleming Collective—simple ingredients, one pan, minimal cleanup, and something the whole family can sit down and enjoy together.

You’ll need

Chicken breasts or thighs, baby potatoes, olive oil, fresh or minced garlic, grated Parmesan, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and your favorite vegetable such as green beans or broccoli.

Directions

Cut the potatoes in half and toss them with olive oil, garlic, Parmesan and seasonings. Arrange them around the chicken on a sheet pan and season the chicken with the same mixture. Bake at 400°F until the chicken reaches 165°F internally and the potatoes are tender. Add green beans or broccoli during the last 15–20 minutes so everything finishes together.

Serve it right from the pan with a simple salad or warm rolls. And if everyone eats it without asking for something different? That officially qualifies as a Monday miracle. 😂🙌

Monday dinner doesn’t need to be impressive. Sometimes getting everyone around the table—even for twenty minutes—is enough.

Nothing staged or picture-perfect—just a real dinner from a real kitchen. And that’s exactly what The Fleming Collective is about. 🤎

Made it your own way? That’s the best part of a family recipe.

Use the Places Our Communities Have Given Us

Local parks are easy to take for granted. They’re just there—until you stop and think about everything they give families.

A place where children can run. Somewhere grandparents can sit and watch everyone play. A place for picnics, walks, camping, conversations, birthdays and ordinary Saturday afternoons. And many of those experiences are inexpensive—or completely free.

When we use local parks, we’re also reminded that community isn’t only about where we shop or work. It’s the shared places where our lives cross paths.

So use them. Enjoy them. Pick up after yourself. Teach the kids to respect the land. Leave the campsite a little better than you found it. And when you discover a great local place, tell another family about it.

REAL LIFE · FAMILY TIME

Turns Out Kids Don’t Need a Cruise Director 😂

Adults can put a lot of pressure on ourselves to keep everybody entertained. “What are we doing next?” “Are you bored?” “Should we go somewhere else?”

Meanwhile, give a kid some water, rocks, sticks, dirt and enough freedom to explore and suddenly they have an entire afternoon planned. 😂 There’s something refreshing about that.

Not every family outing needs an itinerary. Not every quiet moment needs to be filled. And not every child who says “I’m bored” needs an immediate solution. Sometimes boredom is approximately three minutes away from imagination.

You are not the family entertainment department. Go outside. Give everybody some space. See what happens. 🤎

Good people. Brighter days. Stronger together.

Be the Reason Someone Feels Seen Today

A neighbor may need someone to remember their name. A cashier may need one patient customer. Someone at church may need you to sit beside them. A family member may need a phone call that has nothing to do with needing something.

Kindness doesn’t always require money or a big plan. Sometimes it simply means noticing people.

♡ Small kindness. Big difference.

Who could you encourage today?

REAL LIFE · A LITTLE GRACE

Some Days You Get a Lot Done. Some Days You Keep Everybody Alive. 😂

There are days when the to-do list survives almost completely untouched. The laundry is still waiting, something was forgotten at the store, and somehow the house looks worse at 5 p.m. than it did at 8 a.m.

That doesn’t automatically make the day unsuccessful. People were fed. Someone laughed. You handled what mattered most. Tomorrow gets another list.

Today’s slightly crooked checklist: Laundry ☐   Errands ☐   Perfect house ☐   Love my people ✓

Give yourself enough grace to recognize what really mattered today. ♡

Warm Caramel Apple French Toast Bake

A cozy October family breakfast you can prepare ahead.

Warm Caramel Apple French Toast Bake

Serves 6–8

You’ll need: 1 loaf French or brioche bread cut into cubes, 6 large eggs, 2 cups milk, ⅓ cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 1½ teaspoons cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, 3 medium apples peeled and chopped, 2 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, and caramel sauce for serving.

Start by melting the butter in a skillet. Add the apples, 2 tablespoons brown sugar and about ½ teaspoon of the cinnamon. Cook for roughly 5 minutes, just until the apples begin to soften.

Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread half of the bread cubes over the bottom. Spoon half the apples over the bread, then repeat the layers.

Whisk together the eggs, milk, ⅓ cup brown sugar, vanilla, remaining cinnamon and nutmeg. Slowly pour the mixture over the bread, making sure everything gets some of the custard. Cover and refrigerate overnight—or let it rest for at least 30 minutes if you’re making it the same morning.

Bake uncovered at 350°F for approximately 40–50 minutes, until the center is set and the top is golden. If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover it with foil toward the end. Drizzle a little caramel sauce over each serving.

And if somebody wanders into the kitchen asking, “What smells so good?” before breakfast is ready, we’re counting that as a five-star review. 😂

Fleming Family Tip: Put it together Saturday night and Sunday morning breakfast is nearly done before everyone gets up. Good food doesn’t have to be fancy. Sometimes its best ingredient is simply having people to share it with. ♡

We Want More Days Like This

Notebook for recording family stories and everyday memories, illustrative photo
These are the good days, too. ♡ Illustrative photo — your real family pictures are always welcome.

One reason we created The Fleming Collective was to share more than products or perfectly arranged photographs. We wanted a place for real life.

Family. Faith. Food. Travel. Funny moments. Hard seasons. Beautiful places. Ordinary Tuesdays. And the people we meet along the way.

Our Harris Park day represents a lot of what we want this little corner of the internet to be about. Nobody needs a perfect family to have meaningful family time. You don’t need a perfect house to welcome people inside. You don’t need unlimited money to make memories. And you certainly don’t need every day to be Instagram-worthy.

You just need to occasionally stop long enough to realize: This is our life. These are our people. And this day matters.

Take the picture. Then put the phone away. Sit beside the river a little longer.

These are the good days, too. ♡ The Fleming Collective · Sharing Our Family With Yours — one beautifully imperfect day at a time.
